Floating surface aerators install into a live basin without draining it, cost less to put in and are serviced at the waterline. Submerged diffusers need the basin drained, grid pipework and a blower house, but can be more efficient in deep, steady tanks. For lagoons with a changing level, floating units are usually the practical choice.

## How do they compare?

- Installation: floating units go into a live basin on moorings; diffusers usually need the basin drained
- Capital cost: floating units avoid concrete bridges, grid piping and a blower house
- Maintenance: floating units are reached at the waterline with no diving; diffusers sit on the floor
- Flexibility: floating units can be moved by small boat or added as load grows
- Depth: floating surface aerators work best in 1.0 to 4.0 m; diffusers suit deeper tanks
- Gas stripping: surface splashing drives out hydrogen sulfide and methane

## When are diffusers the better choice?

Deep, steady activated sludge tanks where the floor can be reached for maintenance and energy efficiency per kg of oxygen is the main concern.

## Frequently asked questions

### Do floating aerators need the lagoon drained?

No. They are lowered in and moored to the bank while the lagoon keeps working.
