There are five main types: high speed floating aerators (direct drive, for lagoons with a changing level), low speed surface aerators (gearbox and large turbine, for deep tanks), aspirating aerator mixers (air drawn down a shaft, aeration and mixing in one), directional aerator mixers (a current with no spray) and aerating fountains (aeration with a display).

## High speed floating aerators

Direct drive, 750 to 1,800 rpm, on a float. Lower cost and they follow the water level, so they are the common choice for aerated lagoons.

## Low speed surface aerators

A large turbine turned slowly through a gearbox. They pump far more water per kW and suit deep activated sludge tanks and oxidation ditches, at a higher purchase cost.

## Aspirating aerator mixers

A propeller draws air down a shaft and drives it into the water. One unit aerates and mixes, and some can switch to mixing only for anoxic zones.

## Directional aerator mixers

Push a strong current one way with little noise and no spray, for buffer tanks, channels and lagoons near neighbours.

## Aerating fountains

Shape the spray into a display, for ponds and lakes on show, with solar options.

## Frequently asked questions

### High speed or low speed surface aerator?

High speed floating units cost less and suit lagoons whose level changes. Low speed units move more water per kW and suit deep activated sludge tanks and oxidation ditches.
